Check Out Our Top 14 Photoshop Actions

Photoshop can be confusing and frustrating, especially when editing photos. It’s hard to know what looks good and when to put certain steps in place. Photoshop actions are a great way to simplify the photo editing process. Custom actions can be installed similar to brushes and can be used to provide a filter to the images. Here are our top 14 free photoshop actions that will change your photos from good to great!

1. Cold Nightmare

Fog original shot, landscape
Before
Fog with Photoshop Action, edited, fog
After

Cold Nightmare relies on deep contrast and aims to enhance the drama of a scene. This action works best with images of forest, misty or foggy backgrounds, and any image that has some kind of contrast. It also works to make the image more hyper real to increase the drama.

2. Lecream

A Bridge in France original shot, travel photography
Before
A Bridge in France with Photoshop Action, travel photography
After

This action works to provide an overall warm yellow tone to your image. It is great with pictures that are not overly vibrant and can enhance them significantly. Lecream can improve vacation photos that lackluster or an image that needs a splash of colour.

 3.  PP Sunrise

Golden Sunrise original shot
Before
Golden Sunrise with Photoshop Action, sunrise
After

Capturing the perfect sunrise can be difficult, especially trying to get in all of the colours. This action helps to enhance the colours of your sunrise shot and make it brilliant. It enhances the purples and oranges in the image to create a stronger shot.

  4. Vintage Matte

Yellow Flowers original shot, yellow
Before
Yellow Flowers with Photoshop Action, yellow
After

For those that are fans of instagram filters and sepia tones, this is the action for you. Vintage Matte aims to darken an image with an opacious filter while creating a warm, brown tone. This gives the image a vintage and almost nostalgic feel.

  5. MEGANJOYWINTERBREEZE

Winter Wonderland original shot
Before
Winter Wonderland with Photoshop Action, winter
After

Winter is a great time of year to take stunning contrast shots of snow storms and snow covered buildings. Winterbreeze intensifies the black and white contrast and also adds more snow to the overall picture. This is a way to take an image of a first snow fall and turn it into a true winter wonderland.

6. Technicolor

Lovestory original shot
Before
Lovestory with Photoshop Action, vintage filter
After

Technicolor feeds into history by emulating the technicolor colour palette of the 30s and 40s. This action strips certain colours from the image to create a single tone picture. The result is a toned down vintage representation of photos from the past.

7. Summer Haze

Rose original shot, flower
Before
Rose with Photoshop Action, flower photography
After

Playing on teals and oranges, this filter enhances cool and warm tones while still maintaining a summer feel. This works best on images that are already light but rich in colour such as shots of flowers or outdoor portraits.

8. HDR Strong

Icelandic Waterfall original shot, travel photography
Before
Icelandic waterfall with Photoshop Action, travel photography
After

HDR is a very trendy look in photos but can be hard to achieve organically. Actions are a great way to enhance the sharpness and hyper realism of your image. This action works to improve images that are softer such as waterfalls and other bodies of water, fog, and vivid skies that need slight enhancement.

9. Vibrant Film

Rubber Ducky original shot
Before
Rubbery Ducky with Photoshop Actions, edited
After

Sometimes your image just needs a pop of colour and the vibrant film filter works to enhance the colour in your pictures. It lightens the image and decreases the shadows, making a dark image much lighter while also pulling out the dominant colours.

10. Lomo

Farm sunset original shot
Before
Farm sunset with Photoshop Actions, landscape photography
After

Inspired by the camera of the same name, lomography focuses on oversaturation, quirky imagery, and vignettes. Traditional lomography is captured with an actual lomo camera but is quite frequently replicated in photoshop. The best results for lomography are typically on images with some colour such as a landscape or pictures of cars or other vehicles.

11. Old Photo

New York City original shot
Before
New York CIty with Photoshop Action, travel photography
After

If you are a fan of the vintage postcard look, this is the perfect photoshop action. Using a blue tint and adjusting the contrast of the image, it creates a vintage feel. This action is perfect to transform those dull vacation pictures into something worthy of a postcard.

12. Vintage Wedding Action

First Dance original shot, wedding photography
Before
First Dance with Photoshop Action, wedding photography
After

Despite the name, this filter works for more than just weddings. It works to soften the image and add a purple tint to the picture to give a more romantic and dreamy feel. This action can work for weddings, formal events such as prom, and for anything that could use a softer look.

13. Popper

Big Ben original shot, travel photography
Before
Big Ben with Photoshop Action, travel photography
After

Can’t quite get that image sharp enough? This is a great simple action that makes your image pop with the click of a button. It enhances sharpness and lightens a dark image. It isn’t a super dramatic filter but helps when your picture needs a little boost.

14. Vintage Heaven

Lake shot original, landscape
Before
Lake shot with photoshop action, photoshop, landscape
After

Similar to popular Instagram filters, Vintage Heaven adds a hazy filter to pictures. It works to soften the image almost like a sheet of fog whilst providing a vintage filter. It makes the image warmer and takes away its sharpness. This is great for waterfront pictures and images you want to add a filtered layer to.

I recently did the Photo 101 class with Lauren and it exceeded my expectations! Lauren was a great teacher - very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about photography which definitely helped boost my own enthusiasm. The class also benefited from being small, think it was just 6 of us and the content felt appropriate for a beginner. I now have a good understanding of things like aperture, shutter speed, ISO, composition etc. What I really loved was that there were practical exercises and steps explained that made it so much easier to understand and master what we learnt. My photos have already massively improved, and I can now say I feel confident shooting in manual mode! I would definitely recommend this course.

I took Photo 101, knowing very little about manual photography and left knowing the basics- and more! I'm feeling much more confident in my skills and interested in pursuing more classes. The small class size, knowledgeable instructor and hands-on learning all helped me get more familiar with my camera. I highly recommend taking classes at GTA Photography!

I was very keen to end up at the right place to brush up my photography because I wanted to learn from the best. GTA Photography exceeded my expectations at that. The location is conveniently located one stop from Kings Station with lots of places to eat and practice photography around. The best part I would say are undoubtedly the instructors who are some of the top in their various fields of photography. They were very patient with students asking questions as and when they wanted, which meant by the time we got to the end of the class and QnA session all queries had already been dealt with and everyone was happy with the instruction. We got lots of opportunities to practice as well. I am so happy I found this place to connect with other photographers- I have taken 3 courses already and am planning to take 3 more. I think that speaks for itself!

As a photography and digital arts teacher with both the TDSB and YRDSB I highly recommend GTA Photography (Toronto). They teach us (students and adults) how to capture the special memorial moments of our lives.Dorothy Lange once remarked:"Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still."-

I spent time as both a counsellor at GTA over the summer as well as a co-op student during the school year. Super friendly staff that love teaching and helping people. Sitting in on different workshops and camp sessions, their instructors are always available to help and seeing how they teach, I'm not surprised when I see the other glowing reviews here. Would highly recommend both their camps and adult classes for anyone with an interest in photography!

My 9 year old son had an unbelievable week of camp at GTA photography. He went on amazing field trips, had amazingly passionate counsellors and raves about every day. He also learned a ton and gained tremendous skills and confidence. There were tons of older kids as well, up to 15-16 year olds and they all seemed to love it as much as him. A unique and fun experience. I highly recommend it.

My daughter absolutely loved this camp. It was her first intro to photography and she quoted techniques and instructions from day one. She also quite enjoyed exploring downtown Toronto with the crew. That was a great part of the program. Highly recommend GTA Photography camp.

I received a nice camera for Christmas but did not know how to use it properly while on vacation. Decided to take an introductory course and it provides me with the tools to understand my camera. Alex is a great instructor. Not only is she very knowledgeable but her class was very well structured. She provided me with the confidence to use my camera and highly recommend this to anyone who finds cameras intimidating.

I took a couple of weekend sessions (Photography 101 and 201) to get me going with my new Digital SLR camera. They provided a great foundation to help me progress with my photography. The small class size and enthusiastic instructor made for a great learning environment. Tricia A.

Took the Portraiture 101 class. The Instructor was very informative and had some really great tips for making my photos better. She clearly is very experienced and has a great eye. It was part function and part art course and I loved that! The school was well designed and felt very warm and inviting. I loved that they took us outdoors to practice in real life conditions. I would definitely recommend this course and am looking forward to taking another!

UPDATE: Took the Photo301 lighting class this past weekend with Shayne and it was fantastic. Shayne was an excellent instructor and gave us a good grounding in lighting techniques and tips and tricks that really save a lot of time. I highly recommend this class to anyone looking to advance their skills working with natural, and artificial light.Just finished the photo201 class this past weekend and it was great. The instructor Neil made the class enjoyable while conveying all the necessary information. Material is good, they may want to consider having it printed for note taking. Overall a great class and I have already registered for photo301.

GTA Photography Classes is a really amazing camp for kids of all ages. I was 15 when I took teen camp 1 and teen camp 2 in the fall and winter. The instructors are amazing and I learned so much. The classes were really informative plus the instructors did a really good job making everything as clear as possible. I had Laura and Kylie as my instructors. They were amazing and really knew what they were talking about. Each class was accompanied by a field trip every other week. Because the camps location is in the centre of Downtown Toronto, the field trips were pretty cool if I do say so myself. We went to Kensington Market, ROM, Nathan Philip Square, etc. I highly suggest GTA Photography Classes if you're a beginner and even if you have experience and you want to get a little more creative with your work, it's definitely worth the money.
