Noah Lalonde is not only one of our video instructors at camp but is also a Youtube sensation with over 3 million hits on one of his Youtube short films. We caught up with Noah to hear his thoughts on photography and videography. He is a part of a production company called Crumpled Paper Films that has over 20,000 subscribers.
He shared with us what sparked his passion for photography and video, his favourite gear, advice for amateur photographers, and much more!
When and how did you fall in love with photography?
I fell in love with photography when I was 12. My aunt gave me her Nikon DSLR to take photos at my cousin’s wedding and I just loved the way the shutter felt when I took a photo. Shortly after I got my first DSLR that Christmas, a Canon t3i, and I still use it to this day.
How would you define your photography style?
I define my photography work as more grungy and dirty. I love shooting in the dark and in dirty alleyways or subway stations; I’ve always been obsessed with the look. Most of my work is fashion or music industry related shoots.
What was your most memorable photoshoot or photograph?
My most memorable shoot was the video I made to get into Ryerson. I put a lot of work into it and looking back now I realize just how much this film has done for me. It got me into university, freelance jobs, 3 million views on Youtube, and the confidence to pursue my dream of filmmaking.
Which piece of gear (lens, tripod etc.) is your favourite?
My favourite lens of all time that I could shoot on forever is my Sigma Art 35mm 1.4. The sharpness and the versatility of the lens compares to no other. Cameras from the Canon 5D series are definitely some of my faves too.
What’s your next photography purchase?
My next purchase is a SONY A7Sii. I’m super hyped to get this camera because of its video capabilities and crazy low light.
What advice would you give to amateur photographers?
My advice to amateur photographer is to find your style but also try not to put yourself in a rut by constantly taking the same photos and editing them the same way. With Instagram these days, there’s a lot of trends and fads that are taking place so it’s important to not jump on the bandwagon and do what everyone else is doing with neon lights or prisms.
What do you love about teaching GTA Photography Classes?
The enthusiasm and sense of family here at GTA is infectious. Everyone gets along so well and the campers are really passionate about the craft that we’re teaching which is fantastic. This is the first camp I’ve worked at where it didn’t feel like work.
Just so we can find out a bit more about the person behind the lens, could you tell us…
Who is your favourite photographer past or present? My favourite photographer is a guy on Instagram who goes by the name of “gunnerstahl.us” who shoots a lot of hip hop celebrities and lifestyle. My favourite film director is Christopher Nolan hands down.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? I would definitely live in NYC without a doubt. I love big city living and NYC is just a bigger and better Toronto.
What’s your favourite movie? My favourite movie is a tough tie between Shutter Island and Inception.
What would you do if you won the lottery? I would buy a nice house and constantly travel around the world and fund all the films I wanna make…and also too much camera gear.
What’s your favourite hobby outside of photography? My favourite hobby is skateboarding, helps me clear my mind and relax. As well as getting that much needed physical exercise!
