So maybe you’re a freelancer who has decided to specialize in weddings or you’ve been to a lot of weddings recently and you have decided that you can be the photographer. Whatever has inspired your decision, starting a business is not as easy as taking pictures at a wedding and editing them. Here are the steps you need to follow in order to start a wedding photography business:
Do weddings for free
This concept may freak you out but as someone who is just starting out, you can’t expect your couple to pay you top notch prices for someone who has little experience shooting weddings. Doing the first few weddings for free will build your portfolio and gain you a reputation within the wedding community. You can also work as a secondary photographer or second shooter at a wedding to gain images for your portfolio and work with a professional photographer to see how it’s done.

Give your all at every wedding
This may seem like common sense but even when shooting for free, try to give it your all. Take as many great shots as you can, even ones that aren’t on the shot list. Be kind and respectful to everyone at the wedding too, including other vendors. The wedding community is small and typically works on a referral basis. Be sure to work with the wedding planner and develop a positive relationship with them which leads me to my next point.

Build relationships with people in the industry
The wedding community is small so get to know as many vendors within it as possible. They may at some point be asked for a referral and you want your name to be the one they throw out. Work with the vendors by providing shots of them in action during the reception or refer them if the chance arises.

Get a booth at wedding expos
A great way to directly attract your target audience is by going to a place where tons of them gather. Wedding expos are the perfect place to get your name out there and network with potential clients. You can showcase your work as part of your booth as well which will automatically attract people. This should be the perfect place to get on the spot clients.

Create a website
So you have a portfolio now? The best way to market yourself is by developing a website. Most people are going to do their wedding panning by googling vendors in their area so you need to be online. Creating a great website is only part of it. You also need to work on your search engine optimization skills so your website can be seen by more people on engine searches. This takes some patience as well as some marketing knowledge so work on educating yourself. There are plenty of great website hosting sites such WordPress and Wix that can help you build your site from scratch.
